Mission & Philosophy
“It is the love and affection from teacher to student, and from student to teacher, that endures and continues to live on, long after the school lessons and experiences can barely be recalled.”
Jacque Grillo, June Bulletin
Since 1974, Lone Mountain Children’s Center has welcomed young children and their families into a joyful, nurturing preschool community. We are an independent, non-profit, non-denominational school located in two adjacent historic buildings in San Francisco’s Presidio.
Lone Mountain offers an inspiring environment where thoughtfully designed classrooms and expansive outdoor spaces invite exploration, creativity, and a deep connection to nature.
Our theme-based curriculum balances independent play and teacher-led activities. Through emphasis on traditions and daily rhythms, children experience routine that fosters confidence, self-assurance, and a sense of security. Our long-tenured, deeply devoted teachers build meaningful relationships, nurturing each child’s sense of self while cultivating social-emotional growth, confidence, and a lifelong love of learning.
At Lone Mountain, childhood is honored, community is cherished, and love is at the heart of all we do.
Pillars of the Lone Mountain Experience
-
Dedicated, Long-Tenured Teaching Staff
Lone Mountain’s teachers are the heart of the school and are well known for their expertise, compassion, and dedication. Our teachers are highly experienced with a deep understanding of early childhood, and are committed to understanding and nurturing each child’s individual growth and development.
-
Developmental and Theme-Based Curriculum
Lone Mountain embraces a balance of play-based and structured, teacher-led learning. Our approach increases in depth and structure over time to meet children to be developmentally appropriate.
We offer abundant opportunities for exploring art, music, and creative movement. We value play, creativity, self-direction, and fun while fostering growth, independence and confidence.
-
Strong Community Culture
Parents describe Lone Mountain as a place where “the spirit of togetherness” is palpable. Families are actively engaged in the life of the school. There are many opportunities and social events which help build an active and engaged preschool community of families, teachers and children. The doors of Lone Mountain are always open.

Unparalleled Presidio Campus
Our two buildings contain nearly 8,000 square feet of classroom space, and are connected by over 3,400 square feet of outdoor play area. This grassy, tree-lined field has hosted hundreds of after school birthday parties, recess games, Playball classes, school gatherings and impromptu family picnics.
