Core Elements of the LMCC Education

  • Program Structure

Lone Mountain offers a developmental, project and theme-based program, amalgamating various preschool pedagogies. The school’s three year, three-tiered program serves three distinct age groups. The program builds over the three years and becomes increasingly structured and layered, and offers exceptional preparation for kindergarten and elementary school. Most children experience the full three-year program, but there are always some children who attend for just one or two years.

  • Curriculum

Each of our three classes is built around a thoughtfully curated sequence of projects and themes.   Units such as community helpers, the human body, holidays, and dinosaurs are explored through a dynamic blend of direct instruction and immersive, hands-on experiences. The teacher-led approach is balanced with ample independent play and exploration. Children enjoy rich opportunities in art, music, and creative movement, as well as generous outdoor time on the playground, field, and Presidio.

  • Teachers

All of our teachers are highly educated and deeply experienced in early childhood education. With an average student-to-teacher ratio of 6:1, they are uniquely positioned to truly know, support, and nurture each individual child. In addition to our core teaching staff, children benefit from visits by subject specialists and engaging guest educators—ranging from Conservatory musicians to local firefighters—who bring learning to life in meaningful, memorable ways.

  • Communication

Parents receive detailed developmental narratives each semester—complete with personalized goals—prior to their parent-teacher conferences. Weekly newsletters provide photos and updates that capture what students are learning and experiencing, while a monthly bulletin from the Executive Director offers insights into classroom themes, upcoming activities, and reflections on school life.

  • Performances

Families are invited to attend three seasonal performances presented by their child’s class.  These festive events allow students to showcase the songs and dances they’ve mastered, while building confidence in a warm, supportive setting.  Performances include a Halloween show, a Winter Holidays celebration featuring Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa, and a Spring performance honoring Easter and Passover. Following each performance, families gather for a shared potluck lunch on campus. These milestone moments are a treasured part of the school year, strengthening community bonds while celebrating many cultural traditions and the passing of seasons.

  • Kindergarten Support

Our curriculum and approach ensure that students are exceptionally well-prepared for kindergarten admissions assessments and confidently ready for the next stage of their education. With nearly 50 years of experience, Jacque Grillo offers seasoned guidance. Throughout the application process, the Executive Director meets individually with each family three times, providing step-by-step support and personalized advice. Lone Mountain graduates go on to thrive at top schools, including Town, Hamlin, Cathedral, Burke’s, Marin Country Day, San Francisco Day, Nueva, Mt. Tam, and more.

A standout feature of Lone Mountain is the ongoing communication—weekly insights into student life from our program teachers alongside monthly reflections from the Executive Director.

Jacque Grillo, October Bulletin

“If you're new to Lone Mountain you'll soon see that we are strongly committed to tradition and ritual. Young children especially respond to repetition and predictability. Through the repeated experience of the cycle of the changing of the seasons children gradually internalize a sense of safety, control and predictability. In our small way by passing on these traditions we believe we are doing more than cultural instruction. We are building a child's sense of confidence, competence and the self-assurance necessary to be successful in the world.”

Jacque Grillo, April Bulletin 2023

“If parenting were a science and lent itself to clear formulas and prescriptions all of these decisions would be easy to make. But instead, parenting is a true art, and art requires presence, mindfulness and experimentation. In parenting, as in art, we embrace the task with a sense of direction, but no clear picture of the destination or outcome. And just like with growing up itself, on some days it is enough to just show up -- with an open mind and a willingness to learn, discover, and, perhaps most important, to have fun along the way.”
